The latter is a low-tempo track reminiscent of a Daft Punk deep album cut and isn’t 100% atrocious. The former, the second single released from Evolve, is not half-bad, and it has some character, thanks to the vocal effects in the chorus which sound so much like something M.I.A would do that it is surprising they’re not a straight-up sample from one of her songs. “Thunder” and the album’s last track “Dancing in the Dark” are both quite listenable. It’s frankly unlistenable: a Beatles abortion. Only the end result is not as awesome as that description makes it sound. “Yesterday,” an obvious homage to the Beatles, sounds like Trent Reznor chewed up Paul McCartney and then vomited the bloody pieces back up into a microphone. The only time Imagine Dragons are worse than when they are being boring is when they try to experiment. Imagine Dragons probably think this is reminiscent of late 80s Genesis and Phil Collins, but it’s pure Tedder shlock.

It is the backbone of every One Republic song, and now it’s on every second Imagine Dragons track as well. You know the one: a slow, heavy funeral dirge slog that automatically makes you picture an audience of middle-aged white people clapping along on one and three. Many of the tracks on Evolve rely on a distinctly Ryan Tedder-ish drum beat. Reynolds’ vocals are not the only thing that brings to mind other artists’ work. Why would anyone purposefully try to sound like Maroon 5? On other tracks, his vocal stylings are reminiscent of a less nasal Adam Levine. On several of the album’s tracks, most notably “Walking the Wire,” he sounds uncannily like Coldplay’s Chris Martin. Throughout Evolve, lead singer Dan Reynolds imitates a string of more famous singers. With Evolve, they continue the trend, delivering an at time tediously dull, at times truly awful third studio album. For Imagine Dragons, this slide had already begun with their 2015 sophomore album Smoke + Mirrors. ‘Believer,’ ‘Thunder,’ ‘Whatever It Takes’ and ‘Walking The Wire,’ out now: Shop Imagine Dragons: Follow Imagine Dragons: Facebook: Twitter: Instagram: Music video by Imagine Dragons performing Whatever It Takes. There are few things worse than watching a once promising band slide into mediocrity.
